The Beam Team Scan
Many people expect many things from HR. Employees expect to be listened to, guided, and supported. Top management on the other hand expects to be advised and followed. The value HR can bring is often recognized, but sometimes the HR function becomes the scapegoat for difficulties and failures organizations face.
So, how can you as an HR professional get an objective picture of where your HR team is at? What are your struggles and missing resources that stand between you and your goals? Or which are your strengths and the key assets you can count on to deliver value?
We at Beam are HR professionals ourselves and have worked with HR teams and professionals for over fifteen years, supporting them through challenges and helping them find balance. Based on research and our HR experience, we have built a tool to help assess the state of your HR team. The questionnaire is quick, easy, and gives you a view of where you are on the road to delivering value.
What matters in organizations?
Organizations are complex systems where the results of a team are influenced by many factors. However, we chose to focus on two factors that we found, in our experience, affect how well an HR team can fulfill its potential.
CONTINUITY: the logistics of performance
Even top athletes can’t keep up their performance over a long period of time without numerous experts to support them. It’s the same with HR teams: without having the people needed to tackle tasks and deliver results, you just can’t reach your potential. HR teams often struggle with understaffing, long hiring times, and low retention. Add to this the pressure of specific projects on top of business-as-usual, with strict deadlines, and you have a recipe for exhaustion and firefighting. What we need for an HR team to deliver value is a fully staffed team, with an aligned workflow which leverages at best on all the resources at hand.
IMPACT: The Quality of Performance
Besides the continuity, there’s another key aspect of HR team's functioning: the kind of impact it’s having. Being busy does not mean delivering impact. To have an impact, HR has to adapt to changes in the workforce, legislation, and workplace at a fast pace. HR professionals need to stay up to date on skills and tools, and feel confident to make decisions based on solid information. To do all this, HR professionals need to work towards a mission that reflects their own aspirations, values and ideals. In other words, they need to remember why they’re doing what they do, and see how their daily actions take them closer to it. Our questionnaire assesses where your HR team is in terms of skill development and motivation.
